SUB-AQUA CLUBS
The
Chester Sub-Aqua Club was founded in 1973 and has been based at the City Baths
since the Chester Swimming Association took over its operation in 1977. They are a branch of the British Sub-Aqua
Club and offer diver training to internationally recognised standards. Their main
aim is to offer affordable training to all members of the local
community. Training is carried out by
volunteer instructors, many of whom learned to dive with the club and wish to
give something back. The club
welcomes complete beginners as well as qualified divers who are looking for
further training. “Try Dive” sessions
are held regularly to give beginners a taster of the sport. Discussions are taking place with a view to
offering snorkelling courses for young swimmers from other clubs at the City
Baths. Membership
currently stands at about 70 people, with ages ranging from 16 to 60 years,
with a good split of male and female members.
The committee consists of 11 volunteers with an additional twenty plus
volunteer instructors. The
Chester Swimming Association provides facilities that are essential to the
future of the Chester Sub-Aqua Club.
In addition to the pools and changing facilities these include: §
A secure garage housing two boats, each with a length of nearly 7
metres. §
Secure storage for aqualung sets, oxygen sets, resuscitation
mannequins etc. §
Storage for the club’s compressor and facilities for refilling
gas bottles. §
3-phase electricity supply. §
A lecture room for training courses. §
A dedicated social club for club meetings and social functions. Very much as a result of the diverse nature
of its membership, the club has recently obtained an Awards for All grant to
purchase a new compressor. In addition to the Chester Sub-Aqua Club,
two other smaller sub-aqua clubs teach and train at the City Baths every
week. |
